Chemnitz – Capital of Culture in 2025

How did the Capital of Culture come about?

Chemnitz was named European Capital of Culture 2025 because the city presented a concept with Lakes the Unseen that went far beyond traditional cultural work. The idea revealed hidden potential and combined culture, urban development and regional cooperation. More than 38 cities and municipalities participated in the project and convinced the international jury in 2020. The title provided an important impetus and gave Chemnitz new energy and attention.

What could you experience in 2025?

The Capital of Culture year transformed Chemnitz into a lively stage full of festivals, concerts, exhibitions and international projects. The PURPLE PATH brought contemporary art to cities, parks and former industrial sites and had a decisive impact on the year. One highlight was the opening of James Turrell's light sculpture Ganzfeld Beyond Horizons 2025 in the historic Hall 18 in Oelsnitz. In total, the year offered well over a thousand events and showcased a city that was noticeably coming together culturally, creatively and socially.

Facts and figures about Chemnitz, Capital of Culture 2025

The European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 was one of the most significant cultural projects in eastern Germany – a year full of energy, art and new perspectives. Under the motto Seen the Unseen Chemnitz focused on precisely what had long been hidden, overlooked or underestimated. With a programme that connected the city, the region and its people, new spaces for encounters, creativity and a change of perspective were created. The results speak for themselves: in 2025, Chemnitz not only showcased culture, it lived culture. The opening ceremony alone sent a strong signal. Around 80,000 visitors gathered in the city centre in January and experienced a festival that showcased the city's diversity. Throughout the year, over 1,000 events in Chemnitz and in the 38 towns and municipalities took place in the cultural capital region – an impressive cultural density that encompassed the entire Ore Mountains and Central Saxony.

2025 was also a record year for tourism. The city recorded a Approximately 20% increase in overnight stays, which is roughly 272,000 overnight stays in just six months. Culture became the driving force behind the economy, gastronomy, hotel industry and trade. Particularly impressive was the success of the Munch exhibition at the Chemnitz Art Collections, which 84,000 guests in two and a half months attracted worldwide attention.

One of the most sustainable projects of the Capital of Culture is the PURPLE PATH, a sculpture and art trail unique in Europe, which reached several hundred thousand people through art in public spaces. International artists created installations in the city and region that will remain accessible after 2025 and permanently strengthen Chemnitz as an art location.

All these figures clearly show that Chemnitz not only made the most of its year as Capital of Culture, but also left its mark on it.

Purple Path – Art, Landscape and Architecture

The PURPLE PATH is one of the most significant legacies of the European Capital of Culture. This art trail connects Chemnitz with the surrounding region and leads through Central Saxony, the Ore Mountains and the Zwickau region. The idea is as simple as it is effective. Art should be experienced wherever people live, work or enjoy nature. Along the way, visitors encounter installations by international artists, embedded in landscapes, industrial areas or historical sites. The works open up new perspectives on nature and architecture and make the history of the region visible. The PURPLE PATH is to be expanded over many years. It invites visitors to take day trips, walks, bike rides or round trips and shows how closely art, region and identity are linked. For guests of c o fünf sechs, the PURPLE PATH is an ideal starting point, as many of the stations are easily accessible and can be wonderfully combined with a stay in Chemnitz.
