What you should know about your training as a chef
What can you expect in the culinary profession?
Chefs cook – that much is clear. But first, the menu or menu card must be filled with content. You will also take care of this planning in this job. You calculate prices, purchase ingredients and take care of food storage and preparation. When the restaurant is packed, efficient workflows in the kitchen are essential. As a chef, you are responsible for ensuring that meals are ready on time.
What should you bring to the job of chef?
If you're not good at working in a team, you'll unfortunately have a hard time in the kitchen. There, it's important that everyone works together like clockwork. In addition, you should have a good dose of organisational talent for this job. Your dexterity and good physical condition are required when it comes to cutting and filleting meat, for example. A good dose of care and responsibility is also necessary, especially with regard to hygiene regulations. Your creativity is the icing on the cake – because nothing is more boring for a guest than a plate that has been put together without care.
What school qualifications do you need?
From a legal perspective, there are no requirements regarding which school-leaving certificate you need to train as a chef. In practice, most companies mainly hire trainees with a secondary school leaving certificate or a secondary school diploma. And if you even have a high school diploma, then you're in the right place in this industry. You may be able to shorten your training and very quickly take on positions of responsibility in this great industry.
How long does the training take?
The training lasts three years. In addition to practical training at the training company, theoretical training takes place at a vocational school.
What do you learn during the training?
Whether it's hot or cold cuisine, by the end of your training you will be a true all-rounder when it comes to food preparation. The basis for this is know-how about the selection of food and how it is processed. You will also learn how professional kitchen technology works and what hygiene regulations you need to observe. Throughout your training, you will always keep an eye on nutritional science findings and combine them with economic and ecological requirements. Knowledge of food presentation and advising guests rounds off the content of your training.
What documents do I need for an application?
For a traditional application, a brief CV, your contact details and, if available, references are sufficient. A cover letter is optional.
